Numbers are not just numbers. Each death toll is a human being killed by Israeli forces. Each aid truck is thousands of meals. Each passing day, more are killed.
Despite the ongoing genocide, the Gaza Ministry of Health has a robust methodology for counting and reporting deaths, missing, and wounded. It initially only accepted figures from official hospitals, morgues, and recognized field teams (e.g. Palestinian Red Crescent).
In recent months, the system has been pushed to its limit, and the real death toll is likely thousands higher than the figures below. Here's why:
The system primarily accepts information from official sources, such as hospitals, field treatment centers, and more. As the healthcare system collapses, the Ministry has accepted more sources in recent months but is likely still underreporting.
Overwhelmed, inaccessible, and/or disconnected hospitals may not be reporting. Regions taken over by Israel likely are not able to report.
The Ministry of Health was previously located within the Al Shifa hospital but has had to move for their safety and security.

One of Israel's key methods of collective punishment is through its tight grip on aid entering the Gaza Strip. Little aid has entered via Israel's land crossings, while the Rafah border crossing has received near-zero aid following Israeli forces' latest assault on Rafah.
Malnutrition, especially among youth, has damaging long-term impacts that may be irreversible.
